Purified Water Testing with Nomad

Why you should be using a monitoring program for your water purification system, and how nomad can help

USING PURIFIED WATER TESTING TO DETECT CONTAMINATION

Setting up a microbial monitoring program can help identify and prevent contamination of your water treatment system.

Biofilms can be persistent and difficult to remove once they've taken hold. Biofilm contamination of your treatment system can cause increases in overall contamination levels, with peaks visible when parts of the biofilm detach and enter the water circulation. They can host potentially troublesome populations and even pathogens.  Although it is possible to treat biofilms with some success once they're present, prevention is a more cost-effective and simpler solution.

The Value of purified water testing

Not all steps in your water purification process will be designed to reduce the microbial levels in the water. Some steps may even produce the right conditions for bacterial regrowth if they are not properly maintained, if they are too large for your normal throughput, or if they are incorrectly connected to other steps.

Additionally, your treatment process can become contaminated with microbial growth the point of use. Or biofilm could develop above the normal water-level in your tanks due to high levels of condensation or splash-back. Once on these surfaces, it can be difficult to treat as they are not typically accessible during routing decontamination, as they are situated above the water level.

A microbial testing program will enable you to identify problems as soon as they arise, allowing you to take the appropriate precautions and actions to ensure that significant issues do not develop.  Learn how to set up a program that gives you good quality data, using nomad.

WHO Guidance on HPC Water Testing

"(Microbial) Growth is typically reflected in higher HPC values measured in water samples.

   [..]

Elevated HPC levels occur especially in stagnant parts of piped distribution systems, in domestic plumbing, in bottled water and in plumbed-in devices, such as softeners, carbon filters and vending machines.

   [..]

HPC measurements can be used to monitor the performance of filtration or disinfection processes.

   [..]

In piped distribution systems, HPC measurements are assumed to respond primarily to distribution system conditions. These arise from stagnation, loss of residual disinfectant, high levels of assimilable organic carbon in the water, higher water temperature and availability of particular nutrients.

   [..]

HPC measurements are used:

- to indicate the effectiveness of water treatment processes, thus as an indirect indication of pathogen removal;

- as a measure of numbers of regrowth organisms that may or may not have sanitary significance"

WATER AND BIOFILM TESTING – WHY MONITOR?

Water purification systems are usually composed of several different and separate purification steps, to address a variety of contaminants such as minerals, organic compounds, micro-organisms, solvents, particulates and bacteria.

Variable water quality can be an issue for any water purification, storage or distribution system, as systems are often custom designed, fed by inlet water of variable quality and used irregularly.  Regular microbial testing of your water system through a monitoring program can help prevent issues becoming serious and allow you to act and react to changes as they happen.

Whether you manage a dedicated water purification or treatment system, or you use treated water in a manufacturing process or in a healthcare environment, you can use nomad to monitor purified water quality regularly to ensure that the system is correctly removing contaminants and not contributing itself to contamination.

MANAGE MICROBIAL LEVELS IN YOUR WATER SYSTEM, AND AVOID REGROWTH

Unlike other contaminants, microorganisms can regrow even after being virtually eliminated during processing. Additionally, equipment is rarely equipped for automatic and continuous testing of bacteria levels in water.

If microbial levels in your filtered or processed water are important for your business, or for your customers, then a specific microbial monitoring program is a great tool to help you manage and monitor your microbial water quality. Nomad can help you set this up.

NO WATER TESTING LAB REQUIRED – Start Testing Today!

Monitoring and maintenance of your water purification systems can be time-consuming for your organisation.

It might involve :
  • sampling in hard to access, isolated locations
  • managing and replacing consumables at different rates
  • monitoring multiple parameters, like the softener clock & salt level, pressure and resistivity
  • staff presence at all times of year, even when it's not really needed e.g. during summer or winter vacations

Your microbial testing protocol needs to be simple, fast and easy to coordinate with your existing maintenance patterns
